Pathfinders Project goes to Hollywood

Pathfinders Project is a yearlong international service trip that will evaluate locations and partner organizations for the launch of the Humanist Service Corps.

And so it begins! The Pathfinders may not be abroad yet, but today (July 16) they arrive in Los Angeles for two weeks of service and training before they depart for Cambodia on July 31.

During their time in Los Angeles, the Pathfinders will engage in service projects that will help them gain an understanding of the challenges faced by some Los Angeles residents and will give them the opportunity to work together as a team for the first time. The Pathfinders will help TreePeople preserve the natural habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains by planting oak trees and native bunch grasses. They will help the Westside Food Bank box fresh produce donations for distribution to local social service agencies. And the Pathfinders will complete a painting project alongside homeless teens at Safe Place for Youth’s drop-in center.

In addition to engaging in service each day, the Pathfinders will participate in cultural sensitivity, travel safety, and interfaith dialogue training in order to prepare for the incredible journey they have ahead of them. This preparation will include discussions and guided readings facilitated by the founder of Bridge of Life School, Pathfinders Project’s partner organization in Cambodia.

Near the end of their time in Los Angeles, on July 28, the Pathfinders will share their excitement with family, friends, and local humanists, atheists, and skeptics at a launch event at the Center for Inquiry – West’s Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. Our very own Dale McGowan will be on hand, and the program will feature noteworthy special guests as well as a presentation by the Pathfinders themselves.
