Reaching Out to Haiti, part 2

An addendum to yesterday's post:  In addition to both secular and religious organizations working hard to alleviate suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, some humanist-sponsored initiatives are underway.

Humanist Charities of the American Humanist Association has set up a fund specifically for Haiti disaster relief. From the website of Humanist Charities:

Humanist Charities was established in late 2005 in response to an outpouring of generosity from AHA members and other humanists who wanted to help in the aftermath of major disasters around the world. The AHA had already raised over $30,000 for relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina and had sent aid to a humanist institution in Pakistan following the October 2005 Kashmir earthquake. The AHA had also raised over $12,000 to donate to an allied humanist organization in India for disaster relief following the December 2004 South Asian Tsunami.

Skeptics and Humanist Aid and Relief Effort (SHARE) has created a relief fund to benefit Doctors Without Borders, which lost all three of its Haitian medical facilities in the quake.  To learn more or to donate, click here.

For those of you in the Washington, D.C. area, your local chapter of SHARE is hosting a "Local SHARE Project for Haiti" on 17 January, 11:00am-4:00pm at the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti, 2311 Massachusetts. Ave., N.W.  

The following items are being collected: Baby formula (dry/powder), Baby wipes, Baby bottles, Baby diapers, Hand sanitizer, Vitamins, Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste), First aid kits, Over-the-counter medicines, Socks, Blankets, Mosquito repellent, Flashlights, Batteries, Candles, Flip-flops, T-shirts, Pants, Lightweight jackets, Non-perishable food (no canned food, please).

You may also drop off donations on Saturday, January 16 between noon and 1:30 pm during Secular Family Network at CFI-DC (621 Pennsylvania AVE SE).
