What happened in Minneapolis with George Floyd is not an outlier incident. People of Color have endured hundreds of years of systemic racism and oppression. Law enforcement has its roots in slave patrols and holds an interest in protecting the status quo for wealthy elites, feeding a system of mass incarceration that targets POC.
POC and white people share a mutual interest in racial justice. White silence stokes the division of working and poor people along racial lines, when they have every reason to unite for a better standard of living, environmental justice, and an end to war. Now is the time to stand together to protect communities targeted by police abuse, and tear down the systems that perpetuate it.
Nationwide, people of all races are taking action together, doing everything from setting up bail-out funds to putting their lives on the line in protest.
Foundation Beyond Belief is calling on white humanists to fight for an end to state-sanctioned violence. This means:
Defunding police and supporting community-led policing alternatives.
Learning more about anti-racist work and partcipating in that work.
Following the leadership of Black and brown organizations and responding when they call for action.
1. Donate to Pure Justice, a Black-led organization in George Floyd’s hometown of Houston, working to “amplify the needs and voices of individuals forced to live on the margins due to regressive policies of our current criminal justice system and economic structure. Through organizing, educating, advocating, and innovating, Pure Justice empowers its members and supporters to proactively pursue the changes they deserve.” Pure Justice also co-sponsors the Houston Bail Fund. We also encourage you to support organizations in your community working to #DefundThePolice, as well as local bail funds.
2. Follow the work of Black-led organizations in the humanist movement. These organizations need and deserve as much support as our historically white organizations. Some prominent examples include:

Please keep in mind many organizations have been overwhelmed with recent donations. This list largely aggregates those who are in present need, as referred to the public by such groups as Reclaim the Block, Black Lives Matter, and the Obama Foundation.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. Please contact us (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you can help us edit or expand it.
