Upstate Atheists are holding a Be a Loser competition to encourage their members to get healthy this spring. They are having weigh-ins before their monthly meetings and are allowing members and the public to participate for free or compete for prizes for a small entry fee. The first weigh-ins happened March 2, 2014, and the next is March 16 at the Greenville, SC, meeting. The final weigh-ins are in July.

Beyond Belief Network staff loved this event idea so much, we put together an idea guide so that other teams can hold their own competitions. Goals are easier to reach with public commitment and social support (and a healthy dose of friendly competition), so it’s a great way to encourage people to lose weight. Or you could modify the event to be about exercise or healthy eating rather than weight per se. See our guide for more tips and ideas, and don’t forget to tell us about your events.
