Three Cheers for the 2014 Heart of Humanism Award Winners

Foundation Beyond Belief is thrilled to announce the winners of our Heart of Humanism Awards. This year’s awards recognize the outstanding community service of local groups who participated in our Beyond Belief Network (BBN) program in 2014 as well as individuals who made extraordinary contributions to compassionate humanism.

In 2014, BBN teams held 262 events, varying from blood donation, to community clean-ups, volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens, to collecting and making supplies for people experiencing homelessness, and caring for the sick and their families. In total, our teams donated 30,677 hours of their time.

As of this year, BBN has grown to 111 teams across the United States and abroad. We are amazed by all the exciting service opportunities the BBN teams have held so far in 2015, and we can’t wait to see who the 2015 award winners are!

2014 team winners are:

  1. Humanism at Work Award for Most Volunteer Hours 2014 (9,994 total hours, calculated by multiplying volunteer hours per person by the number of people in group) and $250 grant: Pikes Peak Atheists & Pikes Peak Atheist Families

  2. Eat. Sleep. Volunteer. Repeat. Award for Most Volunteer Events in 2014 (40 events) and $100 grant: Austin Atheists Helping the Homeless

  3. Rookie of the Year for Best Team Added in 2014 (12 events in only the second half of the year) and $50 grant: Pikes Peak Atheists & Pikes Peak Atheist Families

  4. Humanist Communication Award for Best Event Reporting in 2014 and $50 grant: Freethought Dayton

  5. Gimme Food and Shelter for most poverty/hunger-related events in 2014 and $50 grant: Austin Atheists Helping the Homeless

  6. Backbone Volunteer for playing a consistent and reliable role in a community organization and $100 grant: awarded to both Central Ohio United Non-Theists (COUNT) for their regular service at the Ronald McDonald House, and Fellowship of Freethought Dallas for their regular service at the AIDS Service of Dallas Supper Club

  7. Best Photo of the Year 2014 for their stormy action shot of a beach clean-up removing 111 bags of trash from the beach: Corpus Christi Atheists

  8. Best Article of the Year 2014 for Eric Jayne’s excellent opinion column, and this great write-up of their Christmas activities: Minnesota Atheists

  9. Most Valuable Volunteer 2014, based on nominations for their phenomenal service enabling their teams’ service activities: awarded to Angel Lugo of Austin Atheists Helping the Homeless, Christian Ferris of Corpus Christi Atheists, and William Flynn of Camden County Humanists.

  10. If your group would like to make charity a larger part of your identity, consider joining Beyond Belief Network. We welcome any groups with a public secular humanist or atheist identity, with all levels of experience. We provide our teams with how-to guides, tips, and assistance planning and promoting events. Additionally, we award our top teams with recognition, t-shirts, and the opportunity to apply for grants for service projects. To be eligible for the 2015 awards, you must report at least eight events prior to December 31, 2015. Teams may submit backdated reports for all of their 2015 events.​
