Secular Week Of Action is a Go!

By

Secular Week of Action (WoA)— the nonreligious community's response to the National Day of Prayer— is in full swing! Dozens of atheist, humanist, and other secular groups from across the country are putting their values into action, many emphasizing a compassionate response to COVID-19.

FBB is coordinating this year's WoA, and has a hand in a few urgent and exciting service events:

Ending blood discrimination:

blood equality

We're partnering with American Humanist Association  (AHA) to call on the FDA to lift the unscientific and discriminatory defacto ban on blood donations from men who have sex with men (and their partners). Join us by signing our petition to replace this rule with individualized risk-based assessments here.

You can also help us get the word out by creating an event to circulate this petition for Week of Action.

Secular Action 5k:

5k

FBB's staff and other Week of Action teams will be pounding pavement (and floorboards) in socially-distant virtual 5ks to raise funds in support of people facing increased food insecurity! So far there are runners in in TX, FL, PA, MI, AZ, D.C., and Cape Coast, Ghana.

(Our own fundraiser got off to such a good start, we had to increase our goal from $1,000 to $1,500!)

The main event happens May 10th. Check out our blog entry for instructions on how you can run with our crowd by creating a 5k of your own!

#FreeMubarakBala:

2020-May-Serah Free Mubarak Bala with logos

On April 28th, the President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, Mubarak Bala, was arrested following allegations that he insulted the Prophet Muhammad on Facebook. We have reason to believe that his life is in jeopardy.

We're joining Atheists United and Humanists International for a Week of Protest. Join us by tweeting photos of yourself with the hashtag #FreeMubarakBala at:

    @PoliceNG (Inspector-General Mohammed Adamu)
    @MalamiSan (Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami)
    @MBuhari (President Muhammadu Buharipos)

Please also sign a letter to the Nigerian government and discover other actions you can take at freemubarakbala.org.

Mutual aid webinar:

mutual aid

FBB joined up with AHA again last week to present How to Engage in Mutual Aid: a webinar on how secular communities can bolster themselves against COVID-19 locally and nationally.

Mutual aid is a great way engage with your community for WoA and beyond. Check out the recorded webinar on Youtube here.
