July Team of the Month: Flagstaff Freethinkers

By

Congratulations to Beyond Belief Network’s July Team of the Month: Flagstaff Freethinkers! Currently at Level Two, Flagstaff Freethinkers was chosen for this honor because of their regular service event schedule, their dedication towards the betterment of their community, and their example of compassionate humanism.

Beyond Belief Network highlighted Flagstaff Freethinkers earlier this year when they organized a community-wide MLK Day of Service. Twenty-one organizations participated in this event and eleven separate projects were coordinated around the city of Flagstaff, AZ. With two hundred volunteers helping, much was accomplished including the creation of lasting communty partnerships.

One of their regular events is to volunteer at the Flagstaff Family Food Center. Usually, 7-9 volunteers work for three-hour shifts and serve between 150 – 300 people. Among their duties, the Freethinkers help greet customers, bus tables, clean dishes, staff the reading room, as well as prepare and serve meals. Flagstaff Freethinkers even worked with the Flagstaff Family Food Center and the Flagstaff Postal Service Letter Carriers to support The Twenty-Second Annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. They collected food from the neighborhoods, unloaded postal vehicles, loaded the Family Food Center truck and served food to the letter carriers and other volunteers.

Flagstaff Freethinkers also participated in Week of Action! They chopped and stacked donated wood for the Wood for Warmth program in Flagstaff, AZ. Wood for Warmth delivers wood for families to burn in wood stoves and fireplaces. It’s a big help in the fight to stay warm during the dangerously cold winters.

Team of the Month recognition is a benefit provided by Foundation Beyond Belief to our Beyond Belief Network teams. In order to be considered, your group must be a Level One Beyond Belief Network team and you must submit at least one event report during the month. Team of the Month selection is based on the number, length, variety, and documentation (e.g., submitted pictures, blog posts, videos, etc.) of events.

Teams can only be Team of the Month once per calendar year. If your local group does great service work, but isn’t a member of BBN, you can join anytime! In addition to recognition, your team can qualify for free t-shirts and grants. If your local humanist group doesn’t volunteer, but you’d like to start, we’d love to help! For teams new to secular service, we offer tons of ideas, event guides, and advice.
