December Team of the Month: Corpus Christi Atheists

By

Congratulations to Beyond Belief Network’s December Team of the Month: Corpus Christi Atheists! Corpus Christi Atheists is currently a Level Two BBN team. This team was chosen for Team of the Month recognition because of their commitment to local causes, their regular service event schedule, and their interest in improving their community and the environment.

CCA-wo.shel.During their most recent service event, twenty members of Corpus Christi Atheists volunteered at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History to build a new playground. In October, CCA collected donations of costumes, candy and bags for children housed by the Women's Shelter of South Texas so that the kids would have a great Halloween.

CCA-Ex.Corpus Christi Atheists are also environmentally conscious. During Expedition II, a competitive beach cleanup in a national park, CCA fielded 4 teams. The teams removed 111 bags of trash in pouring rain from the beaches including fifty pounds of bottle caps! The top three teams in the competition were all Corpus Christi Atheists teams. One of the pictures of this event that CCA submitted to BBN won October Picture of the Month. The event removed a total of 4,550 pounds of garbage from the beach, of which approximately 2,655 pounds were removed by CCA teams.

CCA-F.B.1CCA-FB2CCA-ref.It’s an impressive number, but nothing compared to the 6,481 pounds of food sorted and packed by seventeen members of CCA for the needy at the Food Bank of Corpus Christi!

Corpus Christi Atheists also supports Guerilla Gardening Corpus Christi, an environmental and city beautification organization. Earlier this year, CCA hosted a fundraiser for Guerilla Gardening. They held an educational event focusing on the history of alcohol and mixed drinks in the pre-Prohibition Era. Attendees could sample drinks at an open bar. $358 in donations were collected. Nine members of CCA later volunteered for a city beautification project organized by Guerrilla Gardening. They weeded an island in downtown Corpus Christi and planted attractive plants.

CCA isn’t only interested in helping members of their local community. They raised over $800 for supplies to benefit Central American Refugees on the border in South Texas and volunteers assisting the refugees. CCA delivered the supplies and volunteered for three hours at the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank helping to sort clothing, food and supplies for the refugees.

Beyond Belief Network again congratulates Corpus Christi Atheists for receiving this honor and wishes them continued success in the coming year.

Team of the Month recognition is a benefit provided by Foundation Beyond Belief to our Beyond Belief Network teams. In order to be considered, your group must be a Level One Beyond Belief Network team and you must submit at least one event report during the month. Team of the Month selection is based on the number, length, variety, and documentation (e.g., submitted pictures, blog posts, videos, etc.) of events.

Teams can only be Team of the Month once per calendar year. If your local group does great service work, but isn’t a member of BBN, you can join anytime! In addition to recognition, your team can qualify for free t-shirts and grants. If your local humanist group doesn’t volunteer, but you’d like to start, we’d love to help! For teams new to secular service, we offer tons of ideas, event guides, and advice.
