By

Beyond Belief Network is a collective of over 125 humanist, atheist, and other non-believing organizations putting compassionate humanism into action through community volunteering and charitable fundraising. Each month we round up the previous month's activities and award the top performers. Let's see what teams crushed it in May!

Team of the Month

2020 May 7_BBN_Atheists United_Virtual 5K for Black Skeptics Los Angeles Emergency Relief Fund 2 copped

May’s Beyond Belief Network Team of the Month, Atheists United in Los Angeles, CA, is new to the Beyond Belief Network and is off and running… literally. Atheists United raised just over $2,000 for Black Skeptics Los Angeles' COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. Multiple members of their community ran 5Ks around Los Angeles in an effort to give back to secular community members and allies in need. Fantastic event and result, Atheists United!

Picture of the Month

The Picture of the Month comes from Atheist Community of Polk County who returned to their service activities in May after a COVID-19 lockdown hiatus. They resumed their adopted road and regular monthly clean ups. They also participated in two events with a new coalition of local organizations and their volunteers, who came together to create a novel food pantry in the wake of COVID-19 called It Takes a Village (ITAV). Food and other essentials are stored at the Unitarian Universalist Church building where volunteers sort and pack boxes to be delivered by volunteers to Polk County families who are unable to access traditional services. Atheist Community of Polk County volunteers participated in two of the Delivery Day operations.

The winning picture (above) comes from their Street Warriors event, during which volunteers handed out meals in Lakeland, Florida to people experiencing homelessness. Street Warriors had been on hiatus due to the pandemic, but has started delivering meals again once per week and will be working back up to four days per week as they were before COVID-19 (conditions permitting).

You’re making a great difference in your community Atheist Community of Polk County! Great job!
