extra_large (1)Congratulations to Beyond Belief Network’s June Team of the Month: Corpus Christi Atheists! This Level Two team is based in Corpus Christi, TX and was featured as January’s Picture of the Month. Corpus Christi Atheists was chosen for this distinction because of their dedication to their community and regular service event schedule.

Recently, nine members volunteered with the city of Corpus Christi to clean, mulch and paint columns at the Agnes/Laredo overpass. Not only did they help beautify the city, the team also saved a baby grackle. The chick is now in the care of the Sea Lab at the Texas State Aquarium. In February, Corpus Christi Atheists joined forces with Burners Without Borders Corpus Christi to clean three miles of beach. The effort removed 3,000 pounds of garbage from local beaches including two burned out cars! In January, team members braved rain and cold weather to help with efforts to recycle Christmas trees. The trees were mulched and given away to residents. That same month, the team also planted trees in a low-income neighborhood as part of a city beautification project.

In April, they fielded a bowling team to raise money for abortion access for low income women in Texas. Four women bowled supported by over $1,300 in donations! In another event, team members gathered over $400 worth of donations to create twenty Chemo Bags to alleviate discomfort experienced by local cancer patients. During Easter, the team arranged secular Easter baskets for children sheltered at the Women's Shelter of South Texas. They collected over $500 worth of candy and toys.

Corpus Christi Atheists launched a children's book drive in April to support the project of a local Girl Scout who created a library on the King Ranch primarily for the children of the laborers. An important project since Corpus Christi, TX ranks second to last in literacy among US cities. CCA donated over 500 books to the new library.

Beyond Belief Network is proud to support Corpus Christi Atheists and wishes them continued success in the coming months.

Team of the Month recognition is a benefit provided by Foundation Beyond Belief to our Beyond Belief Network teams. In order to be considered, your group must be a Level One Beyond Belief Network team and you must submit at least one event report during the month. Team of the Month selection is based on the number, length, variety, and documentation (e.g., submitted pictures, blog posts, videos, etc.) of events.

Teams can only be Team of the Month once per calendar year. If your local group does great service work, but isn’t a member of BBN, you can join anytime! In addition to recognition, your team can qualify for free t-shirts and grants. If your local humanist group doesn’t volunteer, but you’d like to start, we’d love to help! For teams new to secular service, we offer tons of ideas, event guides, and advice.
