January is National Mentoring Month

Throughout January, Beyond Belief Network will observe National Mentoring Month, a project started in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: the National Mentoring Partnership. National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for adults to serve as mentors for children, particularly at-risk youth. January is the perfect time to establish a long-term mentoring relationship with individual children or another group. Because mentoring is generally a one-on-one opportunity, you may not be able to mentor as a group, but you may submit a monthly summary of your team’s mentoring activities.

A mentor is a caring person who devotes time to young people to help them achieve their potential and discover their strengths. Teams can also mentor student secular groups through the Secular Student Association. For more information and ideas on how you and/or your team can mentor, check out our January Event Guide!

If your team currently engages in mentoring activities or in any other service event in your community, or if you’d like to start volunteering, you should join Beyond Belief Network, a group of more than 90 local humanist groups putting their compassionate humanism to work in more than 35 states and online. Joining BBN will get your team access to members-only tips and event-planning assistance.
