Who We Are:

The Secular Humanists of Roanoke, Virginia is a non-profit organization. We’re affiliated with the American Humanist Association , and we are a chapter of the Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH). We believe in the scientific method when it comes to understanding how the universe works and that ethical decisions should be based on reason, empathy, and a concern for humanity and the planet we live on. We are proud supporters and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community, and we are vocal about Social Justice, Church-State Separation, Scientific Literacy, Environmental Protection, and Promoting Peace.

What We Do:

SHOR is committed to making a positive impact in our community through various initiatives. One of them is our partnership with Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley, where we help build affordable housing for low-income families. Another one is our adoption of Wasena Park, where we maintain and beautify the green space for everyone to enjoy. We also adopted a street through The Clean Valley Council‘s Adopt-A-Street program, where we regularly organize community cleanups to keep our environment clean and healthy. SHOR formed a team to raise money and walk for the American Heart Association’s Roanoke Regional Heart Walk 2023.

Our Goal:

Our goal involves expanding our reach, building our reputation in the community as a reliable organization that can offer assistance in any situation, and creating lasting partnerships with other local community leaders/groups in Roanoke.  We are dedicated to promoting the idea of doing good without a god. We believe that morality and ethics are not dependent on religious beliefs, but on human values and compassion. We welcome anyone who shares our vision and is willing to help us in our activities and projects. We also welcome anyone who is curious and open-minded about our philosophy and wants to learn more about Secular Humanism. Our Humanist group is a friendly and respectful community that values diversity and dialogue.
