FBB announces two new small grant recipients

By

Foundation Beyond Belief periodically awards small grants to programs doing unique, focused, necessary work that is line with FBB’s mission. We’re excited to announce two new education-focused small-grant awardees for the first quarter of 2013: the Science Cubed program of Black Atheists of America (BAAm) and Black Skeptics of Los Angeles’ First in the Family Scholarship Fund.

Science CubedBAAm’s vision is to support a stronger and diverse atheist community. As BAAm describes it, “Our efforts will provide for a society where one can embrace the label ‘atheist’ without the fear of being ostracized by family, friends, and members of the community. We envision a world where individuals embrace critical thinking in lieu of faith.” Science Cubed is an initiative that partners with motivated teachers and then donates science school supplies and educational modules for the high school environment. The modules “are designed to teach the students critical thinking and the scientific process.” The goal of Science Cubed is to provide equal access to scientific education for all high school students.

Black Skeptics of Los Angeles was founded in 2010 “as a community-based organization promoting education, advocacy, and media outreach for black secularists of all persuasions.” Their First in the Family Scholarships will be awarded in June 2013 to up to ten South Los Angeles high school students of color who will be the first in their immediate family to attend a two- or four-year college. Scholarships will range from $200-$500. These scholarships will allow historically underserved youth a greater opportunity to achieve what was not possible for their parents or grandparents, but what we at Foundation Beyond Belief feel should be possible for everyone—to have better opportunities through education.
