Meet Ute Mitchell, Parent Community Coordinator

Ute MitchellBy Ute Mitchell, Foundation Beyond Belief Parent Community Coordinator

I have had the honor of meeting Dale McGowan last year and hearing him speak. When he announced his vision for Foundation Beyond Belief, I was thrilled to hear that someone had come up with a cause that I could feel passionate about.

I am a mother of a nine-year-old daughter and an almost seven-year-old son, a homeschooler, a freelance writer, and a humanist. I live in a suburb of Portland, Oregon, with my family. I also teach a Rational Sunday School for children aged seven to ten, a program I started with my husband about two years ago. I had my eyes on the job of Parent Community Coordinator from the beginning, and among my friends declared it mine. Of course, I still had to go through the application process like everyone else, and when I was offered the job, I admittedly did a little happy dance around the house.

As non-theistic parents, you know what you don’t want for your children. And likely you want your children to grow up to be confident, free-thinking, and open-minded adults. But something has been missing for many non-theistic families: a community of like-minded parents and children. We’ve been lacking a place we can go to for support, educational experiences (such as the Rational Sunday School I teach), and of course friendships that could last a lifetime.

Such communities do exist all across the country—there are currently about 40 groups. As Parent Community Coordinator, it will be my mission to support existing communities (financially and by providing training for their leaders) and to create new communities in many more cities.

On the Foundation Beyond Belief website, non-theistic parents will have the opportunity be part of a resource center where you can receive online support, download documents, find informational links and videos, and exchange experiences with others. I very much look forward to building these communities, and I welcome your questions and feedback. Feel free to contact me by e-mail at ParentCommunityCoordinator@gmail.com.

Can't wait!

Congrats, Ute.  I'm excited about what's in store for FBB and the secular parenting communities it'll network.  I'm an ex-pat up in Canada these days, but I hope I can still be somewhat involved with the Foundation, since I'm so excited about what it's doing.

Best of luck!

Rebekah

Congrats!  The Ethical

Congrats!  The Ethical Culture movement may be one of the few humanist organizations with "established" Sunday Schools.  My kids attend such a Sunday School in Skokie, IL (suburb of Chicago).  We were fortunate to host Dale and his seminar last year.  I'll definitely send the folks of our Sunday School information about you, your Sunday School, and your venture here at FBB.  Lots of luck and I look forward to reading your article.  Svetlana

Thank you so much, Rebekah.

Thank you so much, Rebekah.

Thank you.

I love the idea of a Rational Sunday School.  I have been toying with the idea of starting a Children's Philosophy Club, but you're idea sounds like more fun.

How did you begin?  Do you have any tips you'd like to share from your experience?

Rowan,please take a few

Rowan,

please take a few minutes to read my "how-to" article in The Humanist magazine:

I will admit that it takes some determination on your part. "Herding cats" is a quite appropriate term for working with non-theists. However, it is well worth the effort. Currently we hold only one Sunday School meeting a month, but additionally we schedule field trips, movie nights, and potlucks. It really helps the kids to bond and form friendships. Let me know, if you have any other questions.

Ute

Absolutely

Thank you for your response.  I look forward to reading your article.  And I'm quite familiar with the feeling of herding cats.  It sounds like you've worked out some important details, though.  I've spoken with several parents in my area who are interested.  So, I suppose, it's simply a matter of assuming the mantel, in order to get things going.

Thanks again,

Rowan

Great Article

I've bookmarked it for future reference.

Thank you

Keep me updated. I'd love to hear how things work out for you.
