Human Rights
Featured beneficiary in the HUMAN RIGHTS category for fourth quarter 2012:
MADRE

MADREMADRE is an international organisation which works in partnership with local organisations across the globe to improve human rights for women.  Established in 1983 as a reaction to the atrocities in Nicaragua happening as a result of US foreign policies, the organization has refined its aims and expanded across the world. They focus on women because of the vulnerability of women to exploitation and abuse, as well as the the power of women to uplift societies as a whole.  MADRE’s programs cover a broad range of issues, from education, agriculture and economic development to health and reproductive rights.  Training and resources are provided for partner organizations, with an aim of bringing about long-term solutions as well as addressing immediate needs.

The programs run by MADRE and its sister organizations fall into three main areas: Women’s Health/Combating Violence Against Women; Peace Building; and Economic/Environmental Justice, with a wide variety of projects, from clean water, mobile clinics, and safe births, to fighting the impact of child soldiers and militarized rape, providing counselling and shelters, and instigating sustainable farming projects.

MADRE has expanded to an incredible array of countries, in Central America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, South America, Africa, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia, providing training, expertise and advocacy.  Foundation Beyond Belief is excited to support an organization with such a wide international focus, inspiring array of programs, and close relationships with partner organizations.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights five charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.
