ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUNDSince 1979, the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) has been using the legal system to protect the lives and rights of animals. ALDF, based in Portland, Oregon, was founded by attorneys working in animal law. This organization is paving the way for stronger enforcement of anti-cruelty laws and humane treatment for animals in every aspect of American life, including companion animals, competition animals, industrial farm animals, etc. The organization has more than 100,000 members and is supported by thousands of legal specialists.

ALDF works by: Providing free assistance to prosecutors in animal cruelty cases, working to strengthen anti-cruelty laws at the state level, providing education through public outreach efforts (seminars, workshops, etc.), encouraging the federal enforcement of existing animal protection laws, filing lawsuits against animal abusers, expanding the boundaries of animal law, and protecting the future of animal law through Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapters and their Animal Law Program.

Great strides have been made by ALDF in regards to animal rights through several landmark victories in the courtroom. One example is ALDF v. Woodley, where the organization took Barbara and Robert Woodley to court over allegations of animal cruelty. The Woodleys were hoarding over 300 dogs in filthy and inhumane conditions on their property. The judge found them guilty of multiple counts of animal cruelty and ordered the immediate removal of the dogs. ALDF was granted custody of the dogs, who then housed them at an ad hoc animal shelter and with foster families. Permanent custody was awarded in 2007, allowing for the official adoption by their new families. This case set an example of how laws such as North Carolina's Remedy for Protection of Animals statute (Chapter 19A) could be utilized by private litigants to take the overwhelming burden from municipalities and prosecute effectively on behalf of abused animals.

ALDF is one the most active agencies in the field of animal defense, and the Foundation Beyond Belief is proud to support them in their efforts to make the world a better place for animals and humans alike, one court case at a time.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights five charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.
