Peace (2011 Q3)

PEACE DIRECT

PEACE DIRECTFrom Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, wherever there is conflict, there are local people building peace. They are disarming rebels, resettling refugees, protecting the vulnerable, uniting communities and restarting economies. They work at great personal risk to prevent, resolve and heal conflicts in some of the world’s most fragile countries. We find these local peacebuilders, fund their programmes to increase their impact, and promote their work to those in the wider world who can help with finance and influence.

Local people are the key to preventing, resolving and healing conflicts. They are the best way to break recurrent cycles of violence and make peace last. And increasingly they want to move away from depending on outside help, towards building their own futures.

We believe that local people have the power to find their own solutions to conflict. Our mission is to help them to make this happen.

We do so by raising funds for their work, by introducing them to people with influence (in governments, multilaterals such as the UN, and the media), by helping them to grow their organisations, and by enabling them to learn from each other’s experiences. We also bring them to the UK, so that young British people can learn from them, in the London-based Truce 2020 youth project.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.

Active members can help us choose future beneficiaries by researching and nominating charities and by discussing, debating, and advocating for the causes of their choice through our social network and discussion forums. Final decisions are made by the Board, but collective member input is among the most important considerations.
