Animal Protection

Featured beneficiary in the ANIMAL PROTECTION category for third quarter 2011:

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION NETWORK

Wildlife Conservation NetworkWildlife Conservation Network is dedicated to protecting endangered species and preserving their natural habitats. We support innovative strategies for people and wildlife to co-exist and thrive.

WCN fosters the entrepreneurial spirit in the field of conservation. We partner with independent, community-based conservationists around the world and provide them with the capital and tools they need to develop solutions for human-wildlife coexistence. To magnify the effectiveness of their work, we sustain a strong network of wildlife supporters through which these courageous conservationists may learn from each other and communicate directly with passionate donors.

100% of any donation can be designated to the conservation of a specific species, guaranteeing that each donor dollar has the greatest possible impact.

WCN is currently working to protect the Saiga Antelope, Snow Leopeard, Cotton-Top Tamarin, Andean Cat, Cheetah, Okapi, Niassa Lion, Ethiopian Wolf, African Wild Dog, and Small Cat. WCN also has a solar project, a scholarship program, a tree conservation project, and an HIV services project.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.

Active members can help us choose future beneficiaries by researching and nominating charities and by discussing, debating, and advocating for the causes of their choice through our social network and discussion forums. Final decisions are made by the Board, but collective member input is among the most important considerations.
