Featured beneficiary in the HEALTH category for second quarter 2011:
JAPANESE ORGANIZATION FOR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN FAMILY PLANNING (JOICFP)

JAPANESE ORGANIZATION FOR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN FAMILY PLANNING (JOICFP)Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP) is the primary Japanese international aid group providing reproductive health care to pregnant and postpartum women and newborns in the developing world. Since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, they have turned their focus to women and newborns in the affected areas of Japan itself.

Improving maternal health and responding to the reproductive health needs of women is most often overlooked in disaster relief activities. JOICFP distributes relief supplies including diapers, sanitary napkins, and relief clothing for women and newborns, provide healthcare services for mothers and newborns, and offer psychological care for women who are suffering from severe stress after this disaster. All the support activities are conducted in collaboration with local midwives who have been working very closely with the communities.

JOICFP's mission is centered on UN Millennium Development Goal 5 to improve maternal health.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.

Active members can help us choose future beneficiaries by researching and nominating charities and by discussing, debating, and advocating for the causes of their choice through our social network and discussion forums. Final decisions are made by the Board, but collective member input is among the most important considerations.
