Featured beneficiary in the CHILD WELFARE category for second quarter 2011:
BRIGHT STAR VISION

Bright Star VisionBright Star Vision is a grassroots support organization that originated in 2005 when an American woman named Marla Ludwig visited Ghana. A friend's request that she consider bringing some books or supplies to some of the underprivileged there led to her sponsoring a village in need in the Volta Region of Ghana.

After establishing a connection in Ghana, Ludwig partnered with Youth Creating Change (YCC) of Ghana to establish a new Children's Library in Dalive Village. The following year, again in conjunction with YCC, she provided the materials and funds to build 10 bio-sand water filters which produce fresh, non-contaminated water for the village of 1000. The focus project for 2007 was a sod-cutting ceremony for the building of a three-room kindergarten schoolhouse. All these projects have been made possible through fundraising and charitable donations.

Bright Star Vision received more than 15 nominations for FBB sponsorship from members and non-members alike.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.

Active members can help us choose future beneficiaries by researching and nominating charities and by discussing, debating, and advocating for the causes of their choice through our social network and discussion forums. Final decisions are made by the Board, but collective member input is among the most important considerations.
