Child Welfare (2011 Q1)

Child Welfare
Featured beneficiary in the CHILD WELFARE category for first quarter 2011:
generationOn

generationOnIn CHILD WELFARE, we are pleased to support generationOn, a newly-created youth service organization focused on igniting the power of all children to make their mark by creating meaningful change in the world.

With service learning and volunteer action at its core, generationOn mobilizes children of all ages, pre-school through high school, to solve real world problems through community service. GenerationOn brings several existing youth service organizations under one umbrella, including Children for Children, our original choice for Q1 Child Welfare.

SPECIAL ISSUES

Many beneficiaries each quarter sail through the vetting process. In other cases, special issues arise that are part of the final decision. In such cases, FBB reports the issue in a brief note marked "Special Issues" on the beneficiary page to inform members' decisions.

Shortly before the start of the new quarter, Children for Children, our original choice for this category, affiliated with several other youth community service organizations to form generationOn. News of the re-affiliation reached us just days into the new quarter, and after carefully assessing the appropriateness of Children for Children as a beneficiary, we now had to decide whether this new organization fit our criteria as well as our original choice.

We assessed each of the separate service learning organizations that affiliated under this new umbrella, including Children for Children, The League, Kids Care Clubs, and Learning to Give, as well as the new organization itself. In the end we determined that the focus and mission of generationOn is entirely in line with our current selection criteria and represented an excellent choice for member support.

Individual assessments may differ, and as always, FBB members are urged to review the resources on this page and elsewhere to make their own decisions when distributing donations.

ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS

Foundation Beyond Belief highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter. Among other considerations, beneficiaries are chosen for efficiency, effectiveness, moderate size (annual budget under $10 million), compatibility with humanist focus on mutual care of this world and this life, and geographic diversity. All categories feature secular organizations with the exception of "Challenge the Gap," which gives members the option of supporting one progressive, non-proselytizing religious organization each quarter.

Active members can help us choose future beneficiaries by researching and nominating charities and by discussing, debating, and advocating for the causes of their choice through our social network and discussion forums. Final decisions are made by the Board, but collective member input is among the most important considerations.
